The Menstrual Body

This project was a passion project for me. I wanted to explore different themes within photography whilst creating a series of work that spoke to people who menstruate and those who do not. Through “The Menstrual Body” we look at various concepts of showing cycles through different sequences. The thing connecting them all, red. When period products such as pads started to get advertised more openly, they started to show the absorption of the products by pouring blue liquid onto them. This was used instead of the real colour of the liquid – red- as it was seen to be “disturbing” towards viewers. Through this project I wanted the colour red to be overwhelming to fight against that narrative and show the true colour of menstruation.
